The monitor lizards form a genus of scale reptiles comprising over 80 species. They are found in the tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, Asia and Australia and inhabit a wide variety of habitats. Most monitor lizards are elongated lizards with a pointed head and a long tail. Depending on the species, a length of 20 cm to 3 m is achieved. The largest lizard alive today belongs to the genus of monitor lizards: the Komodo dragon.
