Restoration of an antique late Biedermeier extendable table in Bern

Antique furniture pieces are an expression of their time and craftsmanship. Professional restoration not only preserves the substance but also brings back the original charm and functionality.

In our workshop, we restored a late Biedermeier extendable table made of walnut wood, crafted around 1850. The goal was to preserve the original construction, restore the functionality of the extensions, and rebuild the surface in a material-appropriate manner.

Condition and initial situation

The table was characterized by clear design language and high-quality veneering, but it showed damage due to age and use. Loose veneer sections, imprecise extensions, and a heavily worn surface necessitated comprehensive refurbishment.

Restoration and procedure

In the first step, damaged and loose veneer areas were carefully fixed and supplemented. Missing sections were precisely reconstructed and seamlessly integrated into the existing appearance.

The table's functionality was restored by reworking and precisely adjusting the extensions. New fastenings ensure that they can be operated smoothly and stably again.

Surface and Material

The surface was completely stripped and sanded by hand in several steps. By wetting and re-sanding, the natural grain of the walnut wood could be clearly brought out again.

This was followed by a colorless stain and the application of a durable surface with spray lacquer, matched to the table's original appearance.

Two aprons of the center section had to be newly manufactured. These were veneered in our workshop, precisely fitted, and meticulously matched in color and surface to the existing parts.

Result

The result is a piece of furniture restored in substance, function, and appearance, which retains its original character while meeting the demands of contemporary use.
