A look into the past – The restoration of a late Biedermeier extension table
Sometimes we come across pieces in our workshop that are more than just furniture—they are witnesses to a time. A late Biedermeier extension table made of fine walnut, crafted around 1850, was one of these special projects. With great dedication and care, we were able to restore this elegant table and breathe new life into it.
The charm of Biedermeier
The table impressed with its clear, harmonious design and carefully crafted veneer, typical of the late Biedermeier period. However, time and use had left their mark: the veneer had peeled away in several places, the drawers no longer closed properly, and the surface had lost its shine.
Steps of restoration
The restoration began with a thorough inventory and a clear plan to preserve the table's original character.
-
Fixing and renewing veneer
Loose parts of the walnut veneer were carefully fixed, damaged areas were replaced with precisely fitting additions and seamlessly integrated into the existing picture. -
Precisely fitting drawers and new fastenings
The table's functionality was crucial. We redesigned the drawers, adjusted them to fit perfectly, and fitted them with new fasteners so they run smoothly again. -
Surface treatment
The entire table was completely stripped of lye and sanded by hand—a time-consuming but crucial process to bring out the natural grain of the walnut. After soaking, it was stained with a colorless finish, sanded again by hand, and finally sealed with a spray varnish. -
Reconstruction of the frames
Two of the centerpiece's frames had to be remade. The veneer was pressed, precisely fitted, and glued in our workshop. These new parts also received a custom stain, hand-finishing, and spray-painting to ensure a harmonious fit with the overall design.
The result
After many hours of intensive work, the table now shines in its original splendor. The warm grain of the walnut, the smooth-running drawers, and the flawless surface make it a true highlight—ready to create new stories in modern spaces without denying its origins.
A piece of history preserved
It's always a special joy to restore such works of art. They remind us of the skill and attention to detail that goes into each of these ancient pieces—and how important it is to preserve them for future generations.
