Chinchorro Wayúu Doble Face Hammocks: A work of textile art
The Wayúu Indians are masters of the ancestral art of weaving, thanks to their mastery of a multitude of techniques. Among their most remarkable creations are hammocks, including the famous "Chinchorro Wayúu Doble Face". For the Wayúu, weaving a hammock, like the Wayúu 4 hammock, means showing life as they feel it, through their creativity, intelligence and wisdom.
Wayúu 4 hammock: a giant hammock with an extra-large weave
The central part of the Wayúu hammock (the hammock body) is double-woven using a weaving technique called "Keiñasü" (chain). This is all done by hand, thread by thread, on a traditional Wayúu vertical loom. The result is a very strong, airy weave. The two side bangs are crocheted. They bear a sublime traditional Wayúu design called "Kuliitchiyaa", inspired by the shapes seen on the roofs of Wayúu houses in La Guajira. The meaning of "Double Face"
The term "Doble Face", meaning "double face" in French, refers to a particular type of hammock with two distinct sides, each offering a unique aesthetic. This characteristic, while fascinating, makes the manufacture of these hammocks exceptionally complex, explaining their lengthy production process.
The Chinchorro Wayúu: the world's most expensive hammock
These types of Wayúu hammock, known as Chinchorro in Venezuela and Colombia, are the most prestigious available today, thanks to their craftsmanship and quality. Highly resistant and comfortable, they are a rare object for decoration and unique moments of relaxation. Thousands of women in the deserts of La Guajira weave the patterns of their dreams, making the world's finest hammocks.
The Wayùu community: guardians of an ancient tradition
Occupying a vast territory encompassing parts of Colombia and Venezuela, the Wayúu community embodies a way of life marked by freedom of movement. Their ability to cross the borders between Colombia and Venezuela without a passport is a testament to this freedom. Many Colombians admire and respect them for having preserved their way of life as their ancestors did long before Spanish colonization.
Respect for Wayùu craftsmanship: a non-negotiable standard
We never negotiate the price of a Wayúu hammock. This would be a lack of respect for the work carried out and considered an offense to the community. The rarity of these objects and the time spent making them (in a single piece) must be appreciated for their handcrafted quality before any resale profit. At a time when artificial intelligence is developing in leaps and bounds, this way of trading reminds us all of the importance of recognizing the intrinsic value of handcrafted products, impossible to reproduce with machines and those who make them.
Acquiring Wayùu Chinchorros: an annual challenge
Despite their high cost, Chinchorro Doble Face hammocks are highly prized and often difficult to obtain due to low production and high demand. Each season, the number of Wayúu hammocks is therefore limited, and we have to plan our orders well in advance to enable us to secure these precious textiles.
The mystery of the hammock
A 2011 study by the University of Geneva in Switzerland reveals that the rocking motion of the hammock helps us to fall asleep faster and more deeply than in bed. This is not a new practice, however, since man has always rocked his children to sleep. While we all know how easily we fall asleep in a rocking chair or a car, and despite our knowledge of these effects, no precise neuroscientific explanation has yet been found. This mystery continues to arouse scientific curiosity.
